Lifeboat called to rescue couple in Submerged Camper Van

Beaumaris RNLI Lifeboat was called out on Friday night at 00.35 after the police reported a camper van half submerged with two people in it at a trailer park near the slip at Menai Bridge.

Beaumaris RNLI’s volunteer crew were assembled and found when they arrived at Menai Bridge that they could take the RNLI lifeboat right up to the camper van due to the high tide.  The two camper van passengers were able to open the van’s door to board the RNLI’s Lifeboat and were then taken by the volunteer lifeboat crew to shore.  The crew remained with the two van passengers as they were suffering from shock and cold till an ambulance arrived when they were put in the care of the paramedics.  The volunteer lifeboat crew then returned to the Lifeboat Station.

Phil Greville (standing second from the right) with the Goddard family from Prescot, Merseyside who presented a donation to Beaumaris RNLI with Antony Robinson, Beaumaris RNLI helm (far right) and Gareth Parry, Beaumaris RNLI Deputy Launching Authority (kneeling).
Beaumaris Lifeboat Station has welcomed Phil Greville as the station’s dedicated Lifeboat Operations Manager (LOM).  Phil, who currently works for the RAF as Regional Liaison Office for Wales based at RAF Valley, will be responsible for managing all operational activities at the lifeboat station, authorising the launch of the lifeboat and the day-to-day management of the station assisted by the team of DLAs (deputy launching authority).
Phil, who is a keen sailor but fortunately never needed the RNLI’s services, has worked closely with the RNLI in his RAF capacity at civic events in Beaumaris and also during the national multi-agency emergency flood training exercises held at Bala during March.
Phil said;  “I am delighted to have joined Beaumaris Lifeboat Station as I have long been a great admirer of the RNLI and the crew’s commitment, dedication and loyalty.  There is a lot of synergy between the RAF and RNLI as they have the same core values and in both teamwork and training is paramount, so I look forward to working with the team in continuing to provide this valuable lifesaving service.”  One of Phil’s first roles as LOM was to receive a donation from the Goddard family from Prescot, Merseyside.  The donations came from the funeral service of Mr Alan Goddard.

The lifeboat has had a busy week, with three of the "shouts" waking the volunteer crew at night. As well as working with the RAF rescue helicopter and HM coastguard on rescues at sea, the volunteer crew have also had to deal with hoaxers. Two holidaymakers who were rescued on Monday night called the coastguard with the story that they were again adrift in a fishing boat at 2 am on Wednesday night to watch the lifeboat launch from the shore.
